For a couple of decades, soda was the number one most popular beverage in the United States. Until a few years ago, that is, when more and more people started trading in their soda for bottled water. And for good reason too! Soda is packed with sugar, preservatives, and other baddies that can have an adverse impact on your heath.
Unfortunately, for some, soda just tastes so darn good that it’s a hard habit to break. For many, the trick is to find healthy drinks to replace soda when the craving strikes. It’s actually a lot like quitting smoking!
If’ you’re looking to kick the soda habit, these healthy drinks are great alternatives! Not only are they better for you, but many are also less expensive than soda!
Water
When it comes to healthy drinks, water is king, and for good reason! These days, more and more people are turning to water to replace their soda habit. It’s completely healthy, and it’s one thing that our body actually needs a lot of. If you love your water cold, fill some bottles and keep them in the refrigerator so you can have a cool refreshing drink when you want one. You can also fill empty water bottles halfway and pop them in the freezer. Fill them the rest of the way when solid, and you have instant ice water!
But, not everyone likes the taste of plain water, since it lacks the zip and flavor of soda. To give your water a little boost, you can try fruit infused water. The sweetness of the fruit is enough to satisfy your sweet tooth, but it’s not even close to being as unhealthy as soda!
Iced Teas
Lots of different iced teas can be healthy drinks, as long as you don’t go overboard with the sugar. Try iced black tea, orange pekoe tea, green tea, or even herbal tea as an alternative to soda. Add a little honey or sugar to sweeten it a little and some lemon for a little zip. Brewing your own iced tea is also quite simple, and it’s cheaper and healthier than commercially bottled versions.
Lemonade
True, lemonade is sweetened like soda, but if you make your own lemonade, you can control what goes into it. Instead of spending hours each week juicing lemons, just look for bottles of 100% lemon juice at your local grocery store.
One of the best things about homemade healthy drinks like lemonade, is that you can sweeten it to suit your tastes. Honey sweetened lemonade tastes amazing, and honey is a little healthier than sugar. If you don’t like the strong biter taste of the lemon, you can also add more water for a more subtle lemony flavor.
Sparkling Water
Many people balk at the idea of drinking sparkling water. At best, it has no taste, and at worst it tastes bad. However, it doesn’t take much to jazz up your sparkling water to make it taste great!
You can add fresh fruits for some fizzy healthy drinks, for instance. They’ll be subtly sweet and have the same bubbles as soda. A splash of fruit juice can also flavor your sparkling water perfectly. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
