There are several important things to think about when purchasing a used car. However, giving the vehicle a physical check-over before buying is one of the most crucial. Here are some of the main things to look out for when purchasing a used vehicle.
#1. Check the Form
When you go to look at a potential used car, one of the first things that you should do is check its form. Before giving it a thorough check-over, it’s important to ensure that the car is on level ground – this will enable you to clearly see the tyres and check for anything that is sagging on the car. Give the car a quick visual once-over to check for any issues such as dents, bumps, and bodywork that is out of place. Bear in mind that small scratches are common and do not usually cause a problem, but bumps and dents can indicate weakened bodywork and are worth watching out for.
#2. Check the Tyres
Although tyres can be changed, the last thing that you want when buying yourself an efficient motor like the used Ford Kuga is for a tyre to blow shortly after buying the car. Before you make a final decision when looking at a potential used vehicle to buy, it’s important to fully inspect the tyres – they should match and be worn evenly. Make sure that you carefully look at the tyre’s surface for any signs of bad alignment, which can be caused by more serious vehicle problems such as worn suspension or steering components, frame damage, or obstacles on the road such as potholes.
#3. Check the Exhaust
Exhaust problems on a car can be costly to repair and, in some cases, can even make your vehicle risky to drive. Because of this, it’s a good idea to get underneath any used vehicles that you look at if you have the chance, to inspect the exhaust system, and to also look out for any rust.
One of the main things to look out for when you inspect the exhaust system is black spots since this can indicate leaking. It’s also a good idea to check the exhaust with your finger, but make sure that it is cold before doing this! Grease or grime on your finger afterwards signifies a serious problem. When the engine is running, look out for any white vapour coming from the exhaust; this is usually an indication that something is wrong.
#4. Check Under the Hood
Once you’ve inspected the outside of your potential car, it’s important to get under the hood and look out for any dents or signs of damage. Check all the belts and hoses for cracks, leaks, or corrosion. Don’t forget to also check the oil and fluid levels, too.
