This past Saturday, my family and I spent 2 hours shopping at Borders. You are probably thinking, so what? Well, with an infant, a rambunctious two year old, plus a curious four year old, that is a real feat. But time went by so fast! The kids were engaged the entire time, playing with the HUGE toy selection that Borders currently carries.
This past week Borders invited me and my family to come and check out their toy section, and challenged me to see how far I could stretch a $100 Borders Gift Card they provided my family with. I was curious as it had been a LONG time since I had visited a bookstore and never had I visited with the intention of buying toys. That provided me with an open mind and creativeness to see how well I could do in this challenge.
How to Score a Good Deal at Borders
The first thing you want to do when you shop at Borders is sign up for a Borders Rewards card. With this program you will receive exclusive member coupons and offers. Signing up was easy at the store, and after checkout, a coupon for $5 off my next purchase printed out. I immediately turned around and spent it buying a book from the bargain section.
This leads me to the second way to score a deal at Borders. Browse the bargain section. This store had a lot of books and puzzles all under $9.99. I was able to pick up a book about dinosaurs for my four year old and another one about farm animals for my two year old for $4.99 each (I used the $5 coupon I got from signing up for Borders Rewards to help pay for this).
The third and probably best way to save at Borders is by taking advantage of their promotions. Borders has a lot of different toy promotions going on right now. For example, Melissa & Doug toys are buy one get one half off. Games and toys are buy two get one free. Finally if you spend more than $25 on your order, you got a free Bionicle toy. So, for example you could buy three games, and if your total after the third (free) one is deducted is over $25, you get not only the third game free but also the free Bionicle toy.
Right now you can get a virtual 20% discount on your purchase when you take advantage of the Gift Card promotion that Borders is offering. Buy two $25 Borders’s Gift Cards and get a $10 Borders Gift Card FREE.
How did I do?
I think I ended up doing pretty well considering one of our purchases was a Playmobil set that took up a third of the budget. We ended up with a total of 13 quality toy and book items for $128 total, and that includes a book we bought to donate to Borders Charitable toy Drive. Because I took advantage of a couple of the promotions, I ended up with not one or two but three free toys (one game and two free Bionicles because I split my order in two).

And my middle son is all about dinosaurs so I would have to do a few models for him to build. And my little guy is a Thomas fanatic. All his books are pretty beat up (after his brothers went through them) that a few new ones would be great. With what is left over I may have to get a book without pictures in it for myself! Anyone remember those?:)

Hi! We are a reading family. In fact my seven year old has asked for NOTHING but books for Christmas this year. I would use the $100 to get her the set of Little House on the Prairie books, the next 39 clues books for my middle school kids, three books in the bargain section ($5 each!) for husband, two Melissa and Doug puzzles for my 4 year old and round it out with a couple more bargain books for my CASA kids as Christmas gifts. Thanks so much, while we always manage to find something for our own kids, thanks to your generous help and advice Christmas will be spreading far beyond our four walls this year!
I would get a bunch of Melissa and Doug puzzles (love them!) and the Mix, Stack and Farm; Mix, Stack and Splash; and Mix, Stack and Beep toys. I think my son would love those.
I love playing children’s board games as a family, and this gift card would be a great way to buy Christmas gifts for the kids.

Just became a fan on facebook! 🙂
There is one purchase that I would never spend my own money on but I would love to have because I love the one dvd I have in my collection. It’s the Scholastic: Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics. I believe there are about 15 dvds with a focus on an author and children’s books on each one with the book as a video. Love Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!
Otherwise I could easily spend on any children’s books or books on file folder games.
I just became a fan on Facebook and shared with all of my friends!
I would definitely get a couple of Melissa and Doug puzzles and probably some Duck and Goose books and definitely a new board game for the family!
Wow, my son loves to read so I know it would go fast. But I think I would have to sneak in Dave Ramsey’s Total Money Makeover for myself!
I heart Borders. My daughter love books, so I’ll buy tons of books for her especially “My little Pony” books, and some computer books for my husband. I’m a member of Borders so I usually get coupons from them so If I win i’ll be using Borders coupon with the gift certificate, for more savings, lol. Thanks!!!!
It would be easy to spend 100 bucks. I would buy some of the science kits and dolls.
My 6yr just told me tonight that she has read every book we own and wants some new ones! I would buy her some Junie B Jones books and Where the Wild Things Are.
I would spend every single dime of a $100 Borders gift card on books and puzzles for my two little girls. I have a three year old and a 17 month old and we read stories every night before bedtime as well as during the day. My oldest would love some Disney Princess books, especially ones with sounds! My youngest daughter loves to sit on the floor and put puzzles together. I’d love to be able to add more variety to their collection. A couple of the Melissa and Doug puzzles would be incredible to have!
I would definitely buy the sorting cupcakes and the stackable ice cream. we have friends with these items and my daughter LOVES them. Also, the tub piano would go over well with both of my children. I’m tempted to get an American Girl doll, but I think my daughter’s too young. I would have to throw in some books for the whole family and maybe a game for my husband and me.
Thanks for the giveaway!
I would probably get the tubby time piano, the Eric Carle stroller toys, the stackable farm, some soft books that are girly for the newest addition to our home and the Calvin and Hobbes set for my biggest boy of all (my hubby)

Lots and Lots of Melissa and Doug stuff and my older Daughter is in to Chapter books now so we could stock up.
Lots of games and puzzles. My girls are really into reading now so I’m sure I could use that $100 very quickly with new books for them.
I have a 2 year old boy who is all boy. He would love the Pirates of the Tub set and Tub Tunes Water Piano. He can stay in the tub until he is a little prune.
He is also very independent, and a constant mover. So keeping him in the stroller or a shopping cart is a constant challenge. Having both sets of the stroller flash cards might do the trick.
I would get the Make your own Sock Puppet. He loves Dragons and Dinosaurs. Looks like I could make some to look a little fierce.
This is a Toy but not that section, but I love the fact that every year Borders has a special edition teddy bear from Ty. We started getting them for Santa to leave him. This year is a Panda. He is in love with Panda’s because of Kung Fu Panda. So this is perfect.

I would get a book for everyone in the family, as we never buy books anymore. My daughter loves the “Warriors” series and there are some new ones coming out according to the website. It looks like I could easily find books that are good reads based on the ratings, ones that I hadn’t even heard of. I would buy a parenting book for myself, history for husband, adventure for 14 year old son. I really liked their website, had never visited it before. I would also donate a book to charity. Became a fan of Facebook of your blog, “Common Sense with Money,” I visit it every day. Also posted your contest too!!
What an awesome give-away! At first, I was thinking about all the great M&D toys, or the Legos, or of course books for my kids (especially my 6 yo who is learning to read). But then I realized that I just might have to be a bit selfish and order all the books on my paperbackswap.com wishlist. Some of those books won’t become available for another 2 years at the current rate… but with this GC, I could own them all in an instant! How fun!!!
Became a fan just now:) Way to go on getting the GC to Borders, that is AWESOME
Hmm as for shopping. I would have to get Rush Hr. JR just because that game is great. They don’t have a lot of toys on their site, but any type of Legos is always a huge hit here. Honestly though, if it could be used for books I would have to stock up on some new books for the kids and for their classrooms. Probably a few board books for the new baby on the way since the ones we have are really beat up from so much use (which is honestly a great thing with books)
So many great things. We love books at our house, so we would get a variety of books. Melissa and Doug toys are always wonderful. Some of the science kits look like fun. I was also excited to see the mini American girl dolls. Those would be perfect for my little girl. And perfect to mail to my niece in Alaska!
WOW $100 at Borders my kids would be in heaven! they love Books and I Think Borders has a better selection and My Kids love the fun event they hold, like the recent Fancy Nancy one was perfect for my 6 yrs old she loves Fancy Nancy , ok but as far as games ones I saw that I know would grab my kids atention would be things like

The site was pretty limited in its selection and somewhat difficult to navigate. We are a family of bibliophiles for the most part so I know I would have no problem spending $100. I noticed a lego klutz book Crazy Action Contraptions that was $21.00 that I know any of my three boys would love. I had a little difficulty finding a beading book for my daughter but I know that Klutz sells them and my daughter would b e thrilled to get one. I also noticed you mentioned playmobil and saw the logo on the side. My younger two love playmobil. One of their favorite parts fo the Christmas season is opening the playmobil advent calendar I purchase. So I know I would have no problem spending the $100 if I won.

I’m sure I would spend about 1/2 of the gift cards on M&D wooden puzzles and stacking toys. Then I’d use the remaining $50 on two American Girl mini dolls (with books) for my older nieces.

wordygirl at earthlink d0t net
I’ve spent hours at Borders over the past 3 weeks and I always end up in the board games section. It was my favorite past time as a child and now my own children love to play with my husband and I. Borders has become so good at offering the best board games today. My “go-to” game of my past is now the same today with my kids – “Yahtzee” and there is a new spin on it (as there always is) that has proven very fun called “Yahtzee Free for All,” which is the best spin yet. I also loved playing Win, Lose or Draw and Pictionary. Today there is one called “Luck of the Draw” that has quickly made it to our family’s favorite. There’s been no funner version of a drawing game in my 44 years of living.
Our family really enjoys fast paced, creative thinking games like Taboo (my fav) and Scattegories as well as card games. So I would immediately add to our collection the following board games we have been wanting: Pictureka; Quiddler; Beat the Parents; Catch Phrase; Buzz Words; Blokus and Flinch. I would also purchase the Lego Avent Calendar.
Did the FB fan comment. Thanks!

We are expecting our first baby in January-so starting a collection of children’s books would be so much fun. I also love the fuzzy stroller cards available with their toys!
I would get some books for my kindergartener who loves to read to his baby sister! Also some craft kits and maybe a game like Rush Hour Jr.
I would definitely buy Playmobil toys for my kids
I would buy some melissa and Doug for my kids, as well as some books. I would also get a couple of calendars for gifts. 🙂
I would buy anything Thomas the Tank Engine and Super Why!– especially the floor puzzles. We like Eric Carle books too.
And I blogged the giveaway here.
I love the Melissa & Doug toys: the puzzles especially
I like the See Through Stories, Craft Paper Bag Puppets, Tub Tunes Water Piano, S’Match and What’s Gnu?. Thank you for the giveaway!

I’d definitely have to spend the vast majority of that $100 gift card on The “My First” Science kits. And maybe just one *small* book for me. 😉 Thanks for the fantastic giveaway!

We love the Melissa and Doug puzzles and games. Such great quality. And with them being on sale, the gift card would go even farther than usual. I also like the Mix, Stack and … series for my son. He is totally into cars and would probably get him the “Beep” one. My daughter likes American Girl dolls. The mini ones are a great idea.
I Plurked it. If you confirmation my Plurk acct is under anglophileff. Thanks!
Thanks Mercedes for the give-a-way .. we are into Thomas these days and Legos, I know $100 would bring many Thomas books and toys into this house! Thanks
We love the Melissa and Doug products!
I would get the Kirsten Mini Doll (my daughter’s name and we live in MN!) and some puzzles and 2 of the Bionicles (the one free, plus one more so my twins can each have one!). I would be hard presssed to go to Borders with $100 and spend all of it on toys though. Some of it would be spent on books 🙂
Borders is awsome, didn’t realize how much they had. Picked up some cool experiment books for our son. Don’t know exactly what we would spend the $100 on but I know it would sure be a lot of fun trying to figure it out!!
Love all of the stuff for budding scientists!
* Sorting Shapes Cupcakes
* My First Backyard Explorer Kit
* My First Science Kit
Thanks for letting me make up my wish list!
I would buy my little girl new books to help her with her reading. I loved Melissa and Doug’s Hangman game!
We would get Pirates in the Tub and stock up on the cardboard books for my little one (the ones that he can’t tear up) 🙂
I would definately be purchasing Melissa & Doug toys for my kids. I have my eye on the calendar and the play food.
I would buy the Meteor Rocket Kit, My First Science Kit, and the Perfumery Kit to give as Christmas gifts!
