What is UPSTART?
UPSTART is an at-home, computer-based kindergarten readiness program for preschool-age children. In Utah, the program is funded by the state and free for participating families. Free computers and Internet are available for families who qualify.
More than 30,000 Utah children have participated in UPSTART since it began receiving state funding eight years ago. Research by the state’s board of education showed UPSTART children were more prepared for kindergarten and were still outperforming state averages on standardized tests through fourth grade.
For the 2017-2018 school year, there are 15,000 available spots enough to cover roughly 25 percent of Utah’s 4-year-olds. But spots do fill up, so be sure to register soon!
Parents love UPSTART! (INCLUDING MYSELF!)
That’s because for just 15 minutes per day, five days per week, students go online for adaptive lessons, digital books, songs, and activities designed to develop their reading, mathematics and science skills! Each child moves through an individualized learning path that adapts to meet his or her skills and needs.
More than 10,00 parents and caregivers of children who completed the UPSTART program have voluntarily completed program evaluations. Here is some of the feedback they received:
How does it work?
All participating children and their caregivers receive training at the beginning of the program. Every family is then partnered with a personal care representative who provides support and monitors their childs progress throughout the year. UPSTART also provides parents with support resources and technical assistance.
